The Mental: A Cognitive Decision Companion

Most difficult decisions are not difficult because the facts are missing. They are difficult because there is no framework to hold the facts still long enough to think.

Philosophers and scientists have spent centuries building exactly this kind of framework. Stoic philosophy gives a way to separate what is within your control from what is not. Aristotle's first principles thinking strips a problem down to what is actually true, rather than what is assumed. Descartes built entire systems of reasoning by doubting every claim until only the solid ones remained.

The Mental takes one of these historical models, matches it to a dilemma you describe, and returns three things: the principle itself in plain language, a reflection question to sit with, and one concrete action you can take in the next two minutes. It also names the cognitive trap the model helps you avoid, and points to the original text if you want to go deeper.

How to use it: describe the dilemma you are working through below, generate a model, and read the reflection question before the action step. The value is in the pause, not just the answer. If the first model does not fit, draw another one. Different frameworks surface different angles on the same problem.

This tool is a reflection aid drawn from philosophy and decision science, not a substitute for professional advice. Anyone facing a significant medical, legal, financial or mental health decision should consult a qualified professional.
